Traveling by bus in the US.

and many consider line run bus service to offer the most basic level of service. In reality, there are a number of services to suit all budgets from basic to luxury but this will depend on the carrier. There is only one company in the US, Greyhound, which rules the industry operating bus transportation services across the country. Several other companies such as Trailways and Coach USA are made up of independently owned bus companies that share marketing functions and branding. Then of course there are other carriers that work on a regional basis and on some routes share it with Greyhound where they cannot supply the service themselves.

There are also what are referred to 'Chinatown buses' which offer a low cost travel option on selected routes - much less than traditional carriers. Originally they were used more by the Chinese migrant community - hence the name - but in recent times this low-cost form of travel has begun to appeal to a larger audience. At the other end of the market are the companies that are trying to compete directly with the airlines - providing a much more luxurious way to travel. If you are someone who is no further than about 6 hours from your destination, this option may appeal as this type of bus service offer and excellent 1st class service so you will not feel as if you are traveling 'budget class'.

So how does one conclude the appropriate conditions when a bus journey is warranted? Answer these questions and you might find what you are looking for: What is the budget that you have planned for your journey? If it is low, take the bus. and this is particularly true on heavily traveled routes in the Northeast where there is a lot of competition.

When you get to where you are going, will you really need to hire a car? Remember in cities like New York, Boston and Washington DC, a car is not only useless but can prove to be a big hassle for driving around and finding a parking space.

What most people don't realise is just how much time is wasted at airports 'waiting' and of course there are the increased security checks so for journeys of under 6 hours, the bus is the best bet. Another advantage is a bus will likely have stop-off points in the center of the city and not on the outskirts like you experience at an airport.

What is your destination? Remember most of the people in the US find traveling by bus more convenient even if it is to the remote area of the country as this is the only viable means of pub transport. Some people prefer the more sedate form of travel afforded by a bus especially when they are in no hurry. If you are under time pressure, the bus is probably not the best choice as it is subject to traffic delays and usually takes a little longer than other modes of transportation. If you are a visitor and intend to visit some of the more remote destinations, the bus is still the best way for you to do this. With fuel prices rising and reduction of train services it could be one of the most common ways move around.
