Like many sexual problems, male impotence is one that both the man and the woman will feel the effects of. Some people like to joke about sexual problems but great strain and distress is caused by this problem by many couples.

Although there could be many underlying reasons for the male impotence, most of the time something can be done to correct the situation.

Erectile dysfunction, to give male impotence its correct name is the condition where sex cannot take place as an erection cannot be maintained.

There are various conditions surrounding the term male impotence as some men can get an erection but not all the time whereas others are unable to ever achieve an erection or only for very short periods.

While numbers relating to male impotence are necessarily vague, educated estimates of the number of men affected by this problem range between ten to fifteen million in America alone.

An erection is possible because the penis is made up of many thousands of blood vessels that enter a mass of absorbent tissue with an amount of muscle attached.

Sexual stimulation which can come in the form of thoughts (even unconscious ones like dreams) or through a form of manual stimulation that tells the nerves to activate a flow of blood into the penis.

The penis, now filled with blood becomes hard and erect; when this erection ends, muscles force the blood back out.

Male impotence can happen when there is a problem with the signals that send messages to the nerves.

In many instances of male impotence the cause can be attributed to an underlying medical condition such as diabetes or even disorders of the kidneys which can affect blood but on some occasions it can be the result of a condition like alcoholism.

Diseases or conditions which affect the blood flow can cause impotence this can also include surgical procedures or accidents to the male sex organs or prostate area. Nerve signals can be disrupted in many ways including when a man is undergoing periods of stress or anxiety.

Once the condition is admitted by the person in question, the next step is to visit the doctor and get a professional opinion for the cause which the doctor may be able to treat immediately.

It is not uncommon for older men to exhibit signs of impotence but exercise, healthy eating to lose weight and giving up smoking usually help.
