These days there is no excuse to suffer sadness alone as many clinical professionals such as cognitive behavioral therapists and psychiatrists can help with the problem. Medical science has moved on a great deal with a number of depression treatments now possible plus depression medications that are likely to make the condition more bearable if not cure it completely. Unlike many years ago when little was really understood about the subject; today depression can actually be cured although the treatment is often expensive although it does rely on an early assessment of the condition. It is now understood that cognitive behavioral and interpersonal therapy can be very successful at helping sufferers of depression as they actually attack the root of the problem.
The road to recovery can actually be swift with many patients often in less than twenty weeks so the treatment is very successful. Before anything else is done it is necessary to have tests run by a specialist in depression so that it is made clear exactly the type of treatment is required. The reason for this is because not all depressions are the same and neither are the medications so you can understand why this diagnosis is important. There is actually a surprisingly wide variety of medications available to help treat those who are suffering from depressive disorders.
The tricyclics are not as popular as the newer serotonin re-uptake inhibitors or the monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Side effects are the real problem and can be worse than the condition they are treating this is why the tricyclics are not used as much today. Often, the doctor will actually mix the medications if it will help the patient. If the doctor believes it will benefit the patient he will use as many of the drugs together as he believes necessary.
In addition to this, the dosages can actually be increased or lowered depending on what the doctor finds to be the most effective. While it may be normal and expected for doctors to try this mix and matching, the patients are warned against playing with their depression medication dosages. The patient must also learn that sedatives and other anti-anxiety medications are not anti-depressant drugs and should not be used as substitutes. Although often prescribed as a combination treatment with other medication, anti-anxiety drugs are not used to cure the problem.
The depression sufferer will usually take these to help keep them calm during treatment which means that the other prescribed depression medication must still be taken. The tricyclic medication group is responsible for a number of the most notable side-effects. Strangely, quite a few users do not appear to mind the side effects for the tricyclic variety and function normally while using them. A doctor would always recommend that the patient contact them immediately a situation like this occurs so another drug can be given that does not cause any side-effects. |
