Often these problems can leave a bitter taste in the mouth and leave you with a dislike of the destination, its people and cost a great deal of money. Other circumstances could mean that you will have to take time out from your vacation to have the Police deal with your complaints. Always use common sense if you want to travel safely, whether shopping in a local village or spending time on the beach, do not put yourself in a position where you could either be in danger or taken advantage of.
If you ever get that distinct feeling that something is wrong, which often happens on vacation, that is your instinct giving you a warning that you should take notice of. Always be careful about traveling with all your documents and money if you are just going to town to see the sights or have a meal. Just take what you need for the time you will be away and place anything that is valuable in the hotel safe. If you place your cash, traveler's checks and credit cards in various locations about your person, then there is less likelihood of pickpockets stealing all your financial assets and leaving you with nothing.
Many couples who have not adopted the travel safely ethos will have 2 credit cards, both accessing the same account; it is much easier to use two cards, each accessing separate accounts so if one is lost or stolen, there is a backup. Some people just make it easy for snatch thieves who specialize in grabbing bags and cameras from unsuspecting tourists who have them hanging from their shoulder; to prevent this make sure the strap is over the head as well. If you are the person carrying the camera or bag, then walk away fro the edge of the road where it is easy for motorcycle thieves to grab something and make a quick getaway. We have all read about the different scams that people have fallen for and the truth is people continue to fall for them because the scammers are professionals and they're good at it.
Complacency is a dangerous trait and we have all been guilty of it when we are on vacation, remember this is what they do every day to make money and feed their families. One way to help reduce the chances of things being stolen is by using a back pack with a padlock, this makes it more difficult to get into and therefore acts as a deterrent. Some people are always losing their keys which isn't a good idea when you are on vacation so a quick remedy is to buy a D-shackle or similar and attach it your belt or backpack with the keys attached. One of the biggest problems is with wallets as the vast majority of men carry them in a back pocket and this is an easy target for any criminal so try varying your normal routine and place it in a front pocket or similar. There is no need to feel as if you are a victim on vacation and traveling safely does not mean you need a bodyguard; these few handy tips can make all the difference if you just apply them. |
