To make travel more enjoyable and less stressful (owing to how often things go wrong) it is often a good idea to re-iterate a few simple rules that can help prevent disaster. Problems that could leave you with bad memories and a dislike of the local people, and maybe having to replace lost items; it could cost you lots of money and end up ruining your holiday. Nobody wants to spend time in a Police station while they are on vacation, much less being too afraid to go out. Always use common sense if you want to travel safely, whether shopping in a local village or spending time on the beach, do not put yourself in a position where you could either be in danger or taken advantage of.
People often neglect to trust their instincts in a situation which can lead them into unnecessary trouble. Before you go out, consider if you actually need all your credit cards, cash, passports and airline tickets because if someone does manage to get hold of them, you will be left with nothing. Expensive and necessary items like identification tickets for example should be left at the hotel in their safe or the room safe if you have one; it is much easier to recover your vacation if you only lose a few important belongings instead of all of them. If you place your cash, traveler's checks and credit cards in various locations about your person, then there is less likelihood of pickpockets stealing all your financial assets and leaving you with nothing.
It is also never a good idea for a couple to use the same credit card, when to travel safely it just is a simple matter to take a second card from a completely different account; as a replacement should one be mislaid or taken. A big thing now is bag and camera snatching from people strolling along, often in the road and unaware of the potential danger so make sure you wear the backpack on your back and sling your camera over your head and shoulder. Some of the easiest crimes involve snatch thieves that may actually work in teams; they locate unsuspecting victims who have a bag on their shoulder for instance that can be easily grabbed by a passing cycle or scooter. Criminals love tourists as they are usually considered easy prey and we all underestimate how very proficient they are at relieving people of their personal belongings.
This complacency can cause problems because these people make their living doing this sort of thing but just a little extra vigilance can make it much harder for them to take what does not belong to them. If you use a small backpack or day bag when wandering the streets or local markets why not buy a small padlock because would be pickpockets will be put off straight away. A good way to prevent your keys from being stolen or more likely lost, is to buy a small shackle that climbers use and while you cannot lock these it is possible to secure them to belts for example. |

| One of the biggest problems is with wallets as the vast majority of men carry them in a back pocket and this is an easy target for any criminal so try varying your normal routine and place it in a front pocket or similar or buy special work travel clothing and theft prevention travel accessories. Generally speaking there is no reason why you shouldn't have a great vacation if you just remember to travel safely, listen to your instincts and act using your common sense. |
