Becoming a vegetarian is an ideal for many people that believe they should convert but don't fully understand the benefits. You might wonder how much of a difference one additional person can make. Ok, so a single person will not change the planet a great deal on their own but there is strength in numbers and it will alter the lives of many animals that would have been killed. To provide an example of this, you only have to look at how many people in America suffer with heart disease that eat meat regularly.

Many of today's heart conditions would not be so commonplace if people did not eat so much food with high levels of cholesterol, such as dairy products and eggs. The organization Earth Save has calculated that a vegetarian has only a quarter of the chance of a heart attack as someone who has meat in their diet. As for people who are pure vegans, it gets even lower: they have less than 1/10 the chance of having a heart. A healthy heart is not the only 'health benefit' to becoming a vegetarian as there are other reasons too.

Meat contains a number of preservatives which have links with cancer, something which is dramatically reduced when you do not eat meat. Animal feed also contains hormones to make them put weight on faster so vegetarians are not usually exposed to these chemicals which most people consume everyday.

A digestive problem, which many nutritional experts believe to be caused by intolerance to lactose, will also be avoided. In addition to health benefits you will receive as an individual by becoming a vegetarian, you will also reduce your share of the suffering human beings inflict on animals.

According to veganoutreach.org, the average American consumes 2,714 land animals in their lifetime.

It is a sobering thought that a change in diet could literally save hundreds of animals from being slaughtered over the course of a decade alone. In addition to this, if you stop eating eggs and drinking milk, you will also reduce your share in the suffering and death of battery hens and their offspring, as well as dairy cows. It is difficult to ignore the impact that eating meat has on the planet and makes the case for becoming a vegetarian stronger.

An improvement in your overall health with less chance of cancer or a heart condition and the reduction of animal deaths provide a compelling argument.
