| Meditation Techniques - Establishing A Routine |

As with any discipline or skill, you need to make meditation part of your ordinary routine. So you need to decide when you are going to set aside your time. Purists will recommend meditating at least twice a day - morning and evening - for 20 minutes a session. But realistically, most of us don't have time for that.
If you can't meditate twice a day, try once a day for 10 minutes - or at least three times a week. Most people have time to brush their teeth and have a hot drink in the morning, so there should be enough time to meditate. But if you're the sort of person who commutes to work in a sleepy daze, gradually waking up after an infusion of caffeine, perhaps meditating when you get back from work would be more fruitful.
According to some masters of meditation, the best times to meditate are at dawn and dusk. After you have washed and before you have dressed in the morning, you are especially open to meditation. All meditations are best on an empty stomach and bladder.
You also need to be realistic. Only by setting yourself achievable goals will you accomplish anything. A good idea is to take your meditation learning curve on a week-by-week basis. Tell yourself that you will do it every day for a week, then congratulate yourself at the end of that week and set yourself another achievable time period. In this way, you will, almost without noticing, find that you're making meditation part of your daily routine. |
