After many years of promoting herbal weight loss products, they have finally started to become popular but there is an ever increasing range to choose from. Probably the most well known of these products are pretty much household names like Guarana, Hoodia, weight-loss plus, dandelion, extract of green tea and the slightly lesser known cascara.

If you are a user of Hoodia Gordonni for instance, you will know its primary function is to help control the appetite. Apparently, it tricks the brain into thinking blood glucose levels are normal thus suppressing the body's natural response to low blood sugar which is the sensation of hunger and while this sounds promising, long term weight loss studies are required.

People who use Guarana find that the caffeine it contains helps to speed up their metabolism in an effort to burn off calories but it is a diuretic as well. Whilst this herbal weight loss supplement is very effective, it is not without some side effects and some users report they feel light headed, sometimes nauseous, anxious and a rise in blood pressure can also be seen.

Dandelion is another diuretic (it makes you urinate more frequently) and whilst side effects are relatively harmless, allergic reactions have been reported. Results from its use are seen quite quickly with an increase in the amount of fluid that is removed from the body but this should only be used for short periods.

Another method of getting rid of toxins from the body is by using the laxative cascara which will also help with weight control. Just because it is marketed as an herbal weight control supplement doesn't make it any better and its overuse can cause depletion in vital nutrients.

One particularly popular herbal weight loss supplement is the extract that can be obtained from green tea which can be found in many products including drinks, vitamins and even as a concentrate in a tablet. A number of studies carried out on the effectiveness of green tea have shown that it does have natural weight loss properties provided the user maintains a healthy diet and continues to carry out regular physical activities.

Despite the large sums of money spent by people on natural weight loss products, there is still little proof that they are effective in the long term. With Hoodia being a rare and protected plant, it is not surprising that a price of fifty dollars for a single months supply is not uncommon which is why many users find their wallet is often the only thing shedding weight. The real truth is that herbal weight loss supplements do have their place but they should not be relied upon to control weight on their own but should be part of a regime which promotes healthy eating and exercise.
