Many dog owners wonder what the best thing is to feed their faithful friend. Is dry better than canned? Should I make homemade or is store bought better? How do I know if I'm feeding him {enough? It's not easy to know the right thing to do.
First of all, if your dog is overweight, you want to be aware of the size of food you are serving him. "Suggested serving" on a dog food label isn't necessarily right for your dog. Dogs will vary based on their breed, intake and amount of exercise they get. Always use the same measuring cup when you portion out the food for consistency. If your dog seems to be putting on weight then cut back on the amount. Actually weigh your dog before adjusting his diet and then put him back on the scale in a couple of weeks to see if there is a difference. Then adjust his food amount accordingly. Don't forget the exercise. All dogs need routine exercise!
Okay, so now you have some ideas on weight control, but what about what to actually feed him. Is dry food better than canned food or vice versa? There is no real clear cut answer to this question. Alot of your decision depends on your dog. Dry food gives some dogs stomach problems. Again, it depends on your dog. Canned food has less preservatives and more water so may be a better choice for a dog with digestive problems. Also, for senior dogs canned food is easier to eat. Research has shown there is no difference between dry and canned food for a dogs oral health.
Is making my own food for my dog better than store bought? There are many pet owners who do exactly that. Be aware that this decision is more costly and time consuming. Mostly homemade dog food consists of fresh meats, grains and vegetables. Many dog owners who have made the choice to make their dog food at home are including things like barley and wheatgrass. These are natural antioxidants and have health benefits for your dog. Always remember to talk with your vet any homemade dog food recipe. Often your vet will advise that you add a nutritional supplement. Once you have an approved recipe, be sure to follow it exactly.
Be sure to observe your dog for any changes when a change in diet is made. Whatever your choice is for your (dog~furry companion~faithful friend}, speak with your veterinarian for additional information.
